ODC Theater presents Alyssandra Katherine Dance Project (AKDP) with guest choreographer Carly Lave through the Fleishhacker Opportunity Fund—an ODC Theater program that subsidizes up to 40 percent of all space and labor expenses for self-producing artists in the Bay Area. The evening entitled BRACE FORWARD presents four works by AKDP and Carly Lave that reference subject matter dealing with gender ascription and deracination. To brace is to make a structure stronger and firmer and to go forward is to make progress. These words represent the focal point of the performance to empower and push forward social justice for women and immigrants alike.
The main company’s dance works in BRACE FORWARD address different facets of choreographer Alyssandra Wu’s identity as a first-generation Chinese American female artist. From exhibiting a biographical narrative of her grandfather’s journey in contrast from the rural lands of China to the metropolitan Silicon Valley, to a piece that showcases the female body’s capacity to persevere in times of trial, this performance’s mission is to encourage empathy and reject the marginalization of immigrants and women. The project seeks to do this by exploring relatable subject matter such as struggle, perseverance, and the need for understanding and framing these states of being within the context of an immigrant/woman’s narrative. Through biographical research combined with dance and film, this project portrays perspectives on gender expression and displacement in an unconventional way.
